Thanks, Dreaming! Had a day off to Kailua-Kona so I wasn't online much. Would be built out of 4x4 pressure treated posts with 2x4s used for the rest of the structure and sheathed in corrugated metal roof panels.

The container would sit under it, and the roof would not only provide catchment area, but shade for the house itself. Here's my list of questions, I appreciate any feedback you can provide.Ģ) Assuming that a composting toilet is permitted, what then are the requirements for a greywater system?ģ) Are shipping container homes legal? (I am talking about a container with real windows and doors, plumbing, and solar electricity, and a fresh coat of paint, not living in a dirty rusted box with the cargo doors as the only opening)Ĥ) Any ideas how much a greywater system would cost for a 2-person residence with a composting toilet?ĥ) Would we be allowed to build a "floating roof" for our rain catchment? What I mean by this is a shed style roof that would feed into the catchment tank, but would not be attached to the shipping container.

We also want to be as "green" as possible. We want to leave a gentle footprint on the land we will be living on. We just want a more gentle pace of life, and one where we aren't slaves to a large mortgage or rent payment. Our goal is to not have a mortgage or pay rent. That being said, what we would like to do is buy a small lot, and put either a shipping container home or other small type of prefabricated, or even a stick-built house not more than 400 square feet. We are also used to very expensive groceries, rent, electricity etc. We have lived many years in St Thomas in the Caribbean, so we are well versed on the pitfalls of getting things done on island time. My wife and I are looking to buy a small piece of property in the Mountain View area in Puna sometime in the next 2 years, with plans to have a small house there in the next 5 to 6 years.
